Purpose

This document provides a structured set of organization design categories, dimensions, and trade-off options to help define Guiding Principles for Organization Design. It complements the Operating Model Template by translating its outputs into a focused set of design choices that can guide structure, decision-making, governance, work design, workforce strategy, technology enablement, culture, and performance expectations.

Guiding principles clarify how the organization should operate when competing choices must be made. They help leaders make consistent decisions across common design tensions, such as centralization versus distributed authority, standardization versus local flexibility, speed versus control, enterprise optimization versus unit autonomy, or automation versus human judgment.
