A workforce segmentation analysis enables a view of the positions that have a disproportionate impact on the meeting of key strategic objectives. These can exist at the corporate or business unit/functional levels, but typically are identified and managed at the corporate level. By identifying those, the HR team can build special plans and programs that enable the recruitment, development, and retention of the roles that are most critical to the achievement of the company’s primary strategies and objectives.
Common examples include top executive roles, product development roles in consumer products companies, specialized software engineers in technology companies, and ICU or OR nurses in hospitals. Such roles should represent no more than 5-10% of the total population of the company.
