Purpose

A plan of action to guide the employee throughout the coming performance period (e.g., year) as they continue to develop necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies for both meeting current and preparing for future job role requirements. The template is used to build a plan and communicate agreement between an individual employee and the functional manager regarding the specific development actions/goals for the coming performance year

How to use this tool

Identifying the individual’s key strengths and weaknesses and the development actions that are to be followed is the first step to enhancing strengths and improving areas of weakness. Areas of weakness are typically any shortcomings relative to the current role and any aligned with future potential role requirements. A conversation should be held at least annually, using the form as both a guide and a data capture template.
